Is there any ruling class in history that would sit by as its country went bankrupt, not by necessity but to serve the ideological agenda of a political fringe? It seems incredible, yet at face value it seems that this perspective is looming on August 2 – and not to just any country but to the world superpower, the United States of America.
Stop payment – Cancel the Debt - Nationalize the banks under workers control - Leave the euro zone and the EU now!
4 August 2011, byThe decisions of the EU summit of July 21 do not represent the "salvation of Greece"—as the Prime Minister of the Memorandum and the Midterm Program hastened to explain and the mass media, submissively dependent on the government, has parroted ever since—nor will they offer a means of avoiding the likelihood of bankruptcy. Least of all are they intended to grant a breathing space to the Greek population; quite the opposite. These decisions basically represent a restructuring of the Greek debt as well as an admission that the debt problem as such has not been dealt with at all, that it is more intractable now than ever. The Greek government will not be able be to pay off the debt despite the brutal social cuts that were made with the first Memorandum, the cruel austerity measures, the dizzying rise in unemployment, and the closure of thousands of companies
Barack Obama: The change that didn’t happen
4 August 2011, by ,With the announcement of the candidacy of Barack Obama for President of the United States in 2012, the campaign trail has officially started. Contrary to what one might have expected two years ago, Obama faces a tough re-election challenge. Furthermore, a victory does not seem guaranteed. Despite the stabilization of the financial system, achieved through a massive handout of public resources without any type of restrictions to the same people responsible for generating the crisis, the real economy is still awaiting the arrival of a true economic recovery.
Impressions of the new Libya
1 August 2011, byI was all the more curious to discover the political and social changes that had taken place in Libya after the revolution of February17, having already spent some months there in 1996. I went there in June this time, going via an Egypt which was itself still in turmoil after its own revolution of January 25 this year. Some Libyan oppositionists I encountered in Cairo facilitated my entry into the country. After 1,300 km and 15 hours by car, we arrived in Benghazi, capital of the Libyan insurrection, having crossed a “border” which seems completely artificial inasmuch as the inhabitants on either side are close in customs, religious traditions and links of family relations and marriage.
