As Bashar al-Assad brutally crushes the last areas not under his control Joseph Daher, Syrian socialist activist, gave this wide-ranging interview to Socialist resistance.
Where can the conflict between the United States and China lead?
9 February 2020, byThe United States and China are today the only two “global” powers to confront each other on the world stage. The more this conflict deepens, the more a trend emerges: the separation into two systems with competing hegemonic ambitions.
A new episode in the struggle of Turkish car workers
8 February 2020, byThe Turkish engineering industry has grown exponentially over the last fifteen years. From 285,737 vehicles in 2001, automotive production has grown to 1,749,572 vehicles in 2017. Turkey is the largest exporter of cars to the European Union, with assembly plants of Fiat, Renault, Mercedes, MAN, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford, etc., and a number of other companies. But the resistance and organization of workers has developed in parallel with this period of industry expansion.
How women shake up the political world
7 February 2020, byThe originality of the Haitian feminist movement lies in the fact that it can be thought of neither in terms of a wave (first, second or third) nor in terms of a defined current (liberal, black, decolonial, etc.). This movement in contradistinction to other feminist movements contributes enormously to the identification of problematic national realities, such as violence against women and girls, political participation, impunity, national sovereignty and the fight against obscurantism.
The White House, “best enemy” of the Islamic Republic
6 February 2020, by ,The assassination of General Ghassem Soleimani by an American drone on 3 January 2020 in Baghdad is undoubtedly another step in the confrontation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States. The targeted assassination of Soleimani, ordered by Donald Trump himself, took place following a long period of mounting tension between Iran and the United States. This act which can undoubtedly be characterised as state terrorism is of course illegal from the point of view of international law (what would have been said if a Western minister visiting abroad had been liquidated by Iran?).
Capitalist crisis, “deglobalization,” and the Left’s challenges
5 February 2020, byAt the time of this speech, the new “progressive” government of the Socialist Party and Unidas Podemos had not yet won a parliamentary mandate. But Manuel GarÃ, who along with Anticapitalistas, was a founding member of Podemos in 2014, had a number of pointed criticisms of Podemos’ trajectory as well as analyses of the new government’s likely direction.
Thirteen theses on the imminent ecological catastrophe and the (revolutionary) means of averting it
4 February 2020, byI. The ecological crisis is already the most important social and political question of the 21st century, and will become even more so in the coming months and years. The future of the planet, and thus of humanity, will be determined in the coming decades. Calculations by certain scientists as to scenarios for the year 2100 aren’t very useful for two reasons: a) scientific: considering all the retroactive effects impossible to calculate, it is very risky to make projections over a century. B) political: at the end of the century, all of us, our children and grandchildren will be gone, so who cares?
The Amazon under the Bolsonaro government: environmental devastation and attacks on indigenous peoples
3 February 2020, byOne of the most striking features of the first year of Jair Bolsonaro’s government was its "anti-environmental" policy, which was covered by the international press following the senseless remarks made by the President of the Republic and his Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles. This policy has manifested itself in numerous scandals, such as the increase in deforestation and burning in the Amazon rainforest, as well as attacks against indigenous (Amerindian) peoples, illustrated by the assassination of Amerindian leaders, such as those belonging to the Guajajara (in the state of Maranhão) and Waiãpi (in the state of Amapá) peoples. The number of murders of members of indigenous peoples is the highest in the last 11 years, with 7 leaders assassinated by order of the Capital, this year alone.
From scandal to scandal in Haiti
2 February 2020, byOn 12 January 2010 a powerful earthquake devastated the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The buildings were often badly made, with poor quality cement. About 250,000 people were killed (one person in ten) and hundreds of thousands were injured or missing. Since then, the damaged houses have hardly been repaired and new homes have been built in the same way as they were before the earthquake, without taking into account anti-seismic standards.
