More than 15,000 people demonstrated yesterday evening in the streets of Athens against the vote in Parliament of a third memorandum which imposes new austerity measures on the Greek people and workers. It was the first day of general strike since Tsipras has been in government. ADEDY (the main trade union of the civil service) demanded: “the abolition of the memorandum” and “the cancellation of the debt”.

Solidarity with the Greek demonstrators opposed to the austerity and the agreement of July 13th.
Freedom and immediate release for all the challenged demonstrators

One could read on a banner deployed before the Parliament: “No to privatizations, let us save the ports, DEI (national electricity company), the hospitals”.

The demonstration was dispersed violently by the “anti-riot” police in Syntagma square and 50 demonstrators were arrested. Among those arrested and placed in police custody and who must appear in court between 11:00 and 12:00 (Greek time)were two trade unionists, one of them was severely wounded by the police.

They are two of our comrades OKDE-Spartakos [1] (component of Antarsya ?— coalition of the anticapitalist left), one educator and trade unionist, the other secretary of the bookshop employees trade union in Athens.

We reaffirm our complete solidarity with the demonstrators who mobilized yesterday in Athens in the continuation of the NO in the referendum of 5 July.

We demand the immediate release and dropping of all charges by the Greek authorities against our comrades of OKDE-Spartakos and all those arrested.

We firmly condemn the use of the violence on behalf of the Greek government against youth and the workers who take to the streets to oppose austerity.

More than ever we are on the side of the Greek people and we demand alongside them: the cancellation of the debt and the memoranda!
