The general strike called by the Portuguese unions against the austerity measures was supported by three million people according to the unions’ spokesperson.

The strike was particularly strong in the public sectors, in transports, schools and hospitals but also in industrial sectors such as cars, shoemaking, paper and cork.

The government’s austerity policy aims to bring the public deficit down from over 9.3% of GDP in 2009 to 7.3% this year and 4.6% next year.
